If you're looking for a fun way to make sweet potatoes, look no further! Because these charred sweet potatoes with honey and butter is packed with flavour, spice and a little heat. Plus they're easy to make, can be prepped ahead of time and don't take more than 30 minutes! It's the ideal side dish, and you're gonna love them.
Oven baked sweet potatoes are a great side dish for almost any main. Of course, they can also be the star of the dish too, but for these sweet potatoes with honey, we're talking strictly about sweet potatoes as a side. The starchy complex carbohydrates provide satiety and energy. I recommend leaving the skin on and eating it, as there is a lot of nutrition (vitamins and minerals) in there. Just be sure to scrub them well before using.
These baked sweet potatoes are cut in half to reduce the cook time and left with the skin on. And then they get a nice drizzle of brown butter ghee and spiced nuts on top. And to balance the sweet, I recommend drizzling with a hot honey after.
You can see how to make hot honey over here with my paleo chicken tenders and hot honey!
Sweet Potatoes: You'll need 4 medium sized sweet potatoes for this recipe.
Brown Butter Ghee: I love the taste and depth of brown butter, so that's what I use. You can of course brown your own butter, or use plain ghee.
This is the brown butter ghee that I use and love. It's also AMAZING for baking these chocolate chunk miso cookies.
Spices: A combination of cumin, turmeric, cinnamon and red pepper flakes provide a savory and sweet combination.
Pecans: Feel free to use any nut or seed here. Other options can include: pumpkin seeds, pistachios, pine nuts, almonds or walnuts. The key is lightly toasting them and tossing them with the brown butter ghee and spices. Plus the crunch on the sweet potatoes is AMAZING.
Hot Honey: A drizzle of hot honey is HIGHLY recommended. You can easily make your own by following the recipe here. Or you can buy one already made, this one looks great and has amazing reviews. This suff is amazing as a dip with chicken tenders, on top of pizza, with chicken wings, on top of ice cream or even in a cocktail or drink!
Limes: Some acidity to balance out the flavours is needed, fresh lime juice delivers that.
These sweet potatoes with honey and brown butter is SO easy to make, and it will only take about 25 minutes total!
First, preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Drizzle the sweet potatoes with some olive oil (or use avocado oil) and some salt. Add the sweet potatoes, cut side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for about 25 minutes, until slightly browned and charred in some spots and a fork easily pierces the flesh.
Meanwhile, make the brown butter ghee spiced pecans. Heat a small saucepan over medium-low heat and add the brown butter ghee. Once melted, add the spices and stir. Then add the pecans and toss to coat, stirring occasionally, until fragrant and slightly toasted. Remove and set aside.
Divide the sweet potatoes onto plates or on a serving dish. Drizzle the brown butter ghee all over. Then drizzle the hot honey on top and garnish with cilantro and limes for serving.
In a small saucepan over low heat, add the honey and serrano pepper and bring to a very low simmer. Once it has begun simmering, lower the heat more and let it sit for up to 45 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool for about 10 minutes
Strain the pepper from the honey using a sieve into a clean jar. You can also leave the pepper in the honey if you want more heat. Store in the container in a cool, dry place.
Make the hot honey ahead of time to speed things up. It lasts a while in your pantry (or somewhere else that is cool and away from the sun). It does get thick as it sits, but it will loosen if you run the jar under hot water.
You definitely want to ensure that you're using a good quality honey. No need for the raw stuff as you're going to heat it over a low heat. But the stuff in the 'bee' bottle just won't do. I like this Wildflower Blossom one from Elias, it's a Canadian brand.
If you have leftover sweet potatoes, store them in a sealed container in the fridge. You can store them with the brown butter ghee and pecans on top and reheat it in the oven until heated through. If you can, leave the hot honey drizzle off and then add it on after it's been reheated.
This sweet potato with honey and butter is an amazing side to roast chicken, chicken tenders, crispy salmon, or for the holidays!
To speed up time, just bake the sweet potatoes ahead of time and make the hot honey ahead of time. To warm it up, just heat the sweet potatoes in the oven and then drizzle the brown butter ghee on top. Heat the honey up if it's too thick by running under hot water and it will get drizzly again.
