I know that no matter how much kale you eat, if you have a negative relationship with food and your body you won’t truly feel well. If you like kale and cocktails, then you are in the right place. Are you a pad thai lover too?! Pad thai is one of Are you a pad thai lover too?! Pad thai is one of my favorite dishes to eat and to make 😍😍. Thanks to @tfal_canada cookware, making this dish is even easier 👌🏻. Thats because making any kind of stir fry or noodle dish is way easier to whip up in a nonstick skillet. Because when you’re creating a quick moving recipe like pad Thai, the last thing you want is any sticking (which will just slow you down!). I love the Thermo-Spot indicator which turns solid red when the pan reaches the ideal temperature to start cooking. If you want to learn how to make my go-to pad thai, I’ve got the full recipe up on my blog. And if you want to purchase your own nonstick skillet from @tfal_canada, you can use my code JACLYNTFAL15 to save 15% off of this as well as other products. #CookingWithTfal, #TfalByMySide, and #TfalPartner

CHEESY SQUASH PASTA SAUCE: let’s just get this o CHEESY SQUASH PASTA SAUCE: let’s just get this out of the way - I love cheese and quite enjoy it, but I also loveeee this dairy-free sauce. I added lots of savoury elements to this sauce so that it’s not overly sweet bc this is a pasta sauce after all 😬. I’ve had SO many people make this recipe over the years and they all love it. I currently have a jar in my freezer just waiting to be used soon too! Here’s what you’ll need to make this:

- Squash (butternut or honeynut are ideal)
- Cashews (raw)
- Garlic
- Lemon or apple cider vinegar
- Smoked paprika
- Ancho chili powder (or regular chili powder) I just like ancho better
- EVOO
- Pasta (I like these big pasta tubes for optimal sauce soaking 😉)
- Fresh sage (so good crispy and served on top!)
- Pumpkin seeds
- Spinach (or other green to add-in)

BODY IMAGE: Even though I’ve worked hard to move BODY IMAGE: Even though I’ve worked hard to move past body image issues & I understand how diet culture works, that doesn’t mean I’m immune to experiencing negative thoughts about my body. For the most part, I’ve learned to respect my body, but certain days or triggers can bring back painful memories & make me question my worth.
.
One of those days was just this past NYE. Getting dressed up in clothes other than sweats (lockdown life 😅) reminded me that my body had changed. Clothes fit a little tighter & when I stood there in my bedroom panicked about what I was going to wear, a lot of shit came up. Stuff from my past, when I’d get upset, swear I was going to “do better” tomorrow & restrict. Other memories resurfaced. Ones where my ex would make comments about my body & appearance (all under the guise of being a joke, of course 🙄). So in this moment, I spiraled a little. I worried that Shayne would notice. And then what would happen? Would he be turned off or no longer interested in me? Then came the thought, would he cheat on me, too? Those previous insecurities resurfaced & in those brief moments, I had the thought that I needed to “do better” tomorrow. Because that’s the thing about words. We’re told they don’t matter, or that they shouldn’t matter. But that’s not really true.
.
So what did I do in this moment? I reminded myself that I’m worthy no matter if my clothes feel a little tighter. I also reminded myself that some people are just assholes 🙃. And I chose the clothes that made me feel the best. And when I came out with that outfit on, the only thing he said was “you look beautiful.”
.
Clearly, I don’t have all the answers about navigating body image. In many ways, I’m still working on it. But it does get easier when you learn to not let those thoughts & past experiences consume you. When you surround yourself with positive & loving people. When you learn to recognize diet culture & the impact it still has on you & do the work from the inside to heal. You can move past them, but yeah they’re still there - & that’s normal.

NASHVILLE HOT CHICKEN & WAFFLES: sometimes you jus NASHVILLE HOT CHICKEN & WAFFLES: sometimes you just need a stack of chicken and waffles, right!? So I’ve never fried anything before and I was equal parts excited and terrified, buttttt @shaynegold87 sure has and he whipped up this crispy and crunchy fried chicken 🍗. It tasted like KFC to me, only better. We used avocado oil to fry it because it’s a high heat cooking oil (and I saved most of it after straining it through a sieve and cheesecloth). We made extra to have the next morning on waffles, because if you’re gonna deep fry, you might as well go all out 😍. Saturday brunch cravings satisfied 👌🏻. #brunchathome

Let’s get this one out of the way first - dietin Let’s get this one out of the way first - dieting doesn’t just refer to traditional dieting such as a low-carb diet, Jenny Craig, or even Weight Watchers (no matter what they refer to themselves these days). It’s also paleo, Whole30, noom, keto, counting macros or calories, or other diets marketed as a “lifestyle change.” So yeah, it’s a lot 💁🏻‍♀️.
.
There are many problems with dieting, one of the major ones is that they simply don’t work. Sure when you start one, it may seem like its working, but as soon as you deviate from it, then what happens? Cravings, followed by overeating, or feeling out of control around the foods that were once restricted. Feelings of guilt for deviating from your diet. Feelings of shame and failure. So what do you do? Hop on another diet, or try that diet again. Because we’re convinced that this time it’s going to work. This time it’s going to be different. Only it isn’t. Because that isn’t the way diet culture works.
.
There’s no money in a system which allows you to lose weight, stop dieting and keep it off without any further restriction. The money is in keeping you stuck in the diet mentality and endless cycle of restriction - overeating - shame - repeat.
.
If dieting worked, you wouldn’t need to go back on it, or another one. If you want to ditch dieting for good, check out my book- Ditch the Diet (pre-order is now available on Chapters/Indigo and Amazon). I go into much more detail about dieting, why it doesn’t work and what to do instead. My approach is one of food freedom and embracing health without obsession. There are also exercises in the book to help you work on strengthening your relationship to food and your body. Link in my bio to pre-order your copy 📖.

This is 37! Another trip around the sun and I’m This is 37! Another trip around the sun and I’m feeling GOOD and so so grateful for everything 🥰. I’ve learned a lot over the years, with the last few years being the most transformative. If this proves anything, I think it’s that the best is yet to come!
.
So here are five lessons I’ve learned over the years:
1️⃣ Asking for help is ok: hands up if you find it difficult to ask for help, *waves both hands.* This goes with the second lesson about being vulnerable, but asking for help can be extremely hard when you’re used to doing things alone. I’ve always been very self-sufficient & sometimes I mistake that for needing to do everything myself. I don’t, and you don’t either.

2️⃣ Being vulnerable isn’t easy, but it’s worth it: opening yourself up means opening yourself up to potential heartache and pain. You can’t guarantee that your heart won’t get hurt, but keeping it locked away won’t solve anything. In the end, I still think love is worth the potential hurt.

3️⃣ Being the bigger person can be hard: when a relationship ends, you may not feel like you got all the answers or validation you deserved. Sometimes, you have to be the bigger person and find those answers, validation and forgiveness on your own. Just because someone isn’t able to provide the closure you need, doesn’t mean you can’t find it on your own.

4️⃣ Aging is a blessing: losing my mom at 26 taught me the toughest lesson of all. Life is short, getting older is a blessing that so many don’t get to experience. Embrace getting older and realize that with age, comes so much growth.

5️⃣ Laughter really will get you through a lot: life can be hard af sometimes. Laughing is seriously the best and no it’s not easy to do in the midst of some hard shit. But I have learned that surrounding yourself with people that make you laugh helps a lot.

Bonus- sunscreen and water are your BFF 👯‍♀️

WALKING INTO DIET SEASON LIKE... 😜🍝. Years a WALKING INTO DIET SEASON LIKE... 😜🍝. Years ago, when I was first starting my journey as a Holistic Nutritionist, I’d spend January consumed with guilt over what I ate over the holidays, how I looked and be ready to start the year fresh. Many times that included running a “detox” program for people too. At the time, I thought I was helping. Looking back now, I can see how misguided I was. The thought that I may have also perpetuated the belief that others also needed to “detox,” and cut out foods, doesn’t make me feel good. But the thought that I may have also further damaged someones relationship to food and their body really doesn’t make me feel good.
.
I’m sorry to those that did this program with me. I was just as much an active participant in diet culture. I used health as a cover up for my own disordered relationship to food because it allowed me to eat only the foods I deemed healthy. I felt safe doing this. I could control my appearance, weight and the food on my plate by saying I was “just being healthy.” So when I designed these detox programs, I sold this as a way to kickstart a “healthy lifestyle.” No one *really* wants to diet, but they do want to feel healthier. And my detox program was the answer.
.
Only it wasn’t. It never addressed the many issues with cutting out so many foods and the effect it would have on those doing this detox long after the 10 days. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel healthier of course. But a 10-day detox isn’t a long-term solution.
.
Maybe this season, we can start to challenge what it means to feel healthier in different ways (other than just your appearance and controlling that with food). Truly feeling healthier can be achieved in other ways, by:
Drinking more water 💦
Saying no more 🙅🏻‍♀️
Making time for self-care 🧖🏻‍♀️
End relationships that no longer fill you up or make you feel good 👋🏻
Get out in nature 🌿
Meditate or journal 🧘🏻‍♀️
.
Beyond food, what are other ways you can feel healthier long term? 📸 @juniper.island @merrysomers

BLACKBERRY KOMBUCHA GIN FIZZ: oh how I love a good BLACKBERRY KOMBUCHA GIN FIZZ: oh how I love a good cocktail, and this one using @empress1908gin doesn’t disappoint #sponsored. The beautiful indigo hue comes from butterfly pea blossom and if you combine this gin with citrus or tonic it can turn into a delicate pink colour 💗. For this recipe I’m using aquafaba which is the juice from a can of chickpeas! This is a great alternative to using an egg white for a frothy cocktail and won’t change the taste. If you’re looking for some gin-spo, try this next time!
Ingredients:
2 oz @empress1908gin
1 oz lemon juice
3/4 oz simple syrup
2 tbsp aquafaba
Ice
Blackberries for garnish and for the cocktail
Kombucha
Directions:
In a shaker, combine the gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and aquafaba without ice. Shake very well, then add ice cubes and shake vigorously.
Add blackberries to a cocktail glass.
Pour the drink in and top with kombucha. Garnish with blackberries 💙.
If you’re looking for a new gin to try, try this one. Not only is it very pretty, it’s also delicious and hand-crafted from 🇨🇦.
