You may not know this about me, but I adore make-up and all kinds of other beauty/personal care items almost as much as food. In fact, I would say that makeup and beauty products were my first love, before avocados and green smoothies. Times sure have changed, but I still absolutely adore all things beauty, however over the past 2-3 years, I have made the switch from conventional products to greener, natural and organic products. It wasn’t easy in the beginning, because I didn’t know anything about the products that were out there and my first foray into green beauty products was anything but beautiful! I remember feeling so frustrated with what was out there and just not impressed with any of the natural shampoos and conditioners that I had tried. That seriously changed when I stepped foot in a store called The Detox Market in Toronto. It was lined with clean beauty brands that looked just as beautiful as my conventional makeup and the store came from L.A. which somehow resonated with my inner Californian/west coast vibe. I was in love! I started with a few brands and after allowing my body/skin the time it needed to adjust, I knew I would never go back to conventional makeup and I haven’t. It’s true, green beauty products for skin care don’t have to suck!
I am fortunate enough to have started working at this magical store and that has really given me the opportunity to learn about the brands and test them out firsthand. What is so great, is this store really does sell the best of the best and they are committed to selling only the finest toxin-free products, so you know that what you are getting are top quality products. So after having the opportunity to test out so many great products, I want to share with you my absolute favourite green beauty products for skin care and hopefully you can try them out yourself to see why I love them so much!
Before I jump into my fave products, I think it is essential to state that glowing skin truly begins with your diet. That is why I created my FREE eBook all about getting glowing skin naturally.
I don’t even know where to begin with this one!? My love for May Lindstrom products runs deep, the packaging is stunning, the ingredients are spectacular and the products themselves work unbelievably well. The Clean Dirt is no exception to this, just have a look at some of the ingredients: White Halloysite Clay, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Marshmallow Root, Calendula Flower, Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg, Ginger, Vanilla Bean, Raw Cacao. A beautiful combination of clays, spices, salts and that activated Vitamin C all work to encourage cellular rejuvenation and increase blood flow. It is described as a daily micro-dermabrasion, although obviously much more gentle than the standard micro-dermabrasion you may be familiar with. I personally use this product about 2-3 times a week and the result is the softest skin imaginable that glows (no really, it works wonders!). If you only try one product from this stunning line, make it this one, you will NOT regret it.
Ok, so it’s actually impossible for me to pick one favourite serum because honestly I love them so much, I could probably do a post on serums alone! They are all so different and provide such a unique experience that I can’t choose just one, I know I have a serious facial serum problem! Let me preface this part by saying, the Odacité line has the best facial serums in my opinion both in terms of ingredients and performance. This green tea lemongrass one gives my skin a radiant glow and it smells spectacular! The combination of Camellia seed oil (from the antioxidant rich seeds of green tea) and lemongrass which is a known astringent are responsible for helping tighten and refine sluggish looking skin. It also works to relieve tension and help calm the body. I just love the way this makes my skin look and feel. As with all oil based serums, always apply to damp skin as this allows the oil to penetrate beyond the skins surface.
This product is 100% pure olive derived squalane that helps with skin elasticity and moisture retention (especially useful for me, as I have always had more dry skin). It improves texture and tone and feels incredibly light and wont clog your pores or feel heavy on your skin. Squalane is produced naturally by the body, however the production of it declines drastically after the age of 30 (sorry friends), which can contribute to dry skin, so using squalane oil may help to restore the proper balance of your skin’s oils. Squalane oil can be used for a variety of uses including helping with uneven skin pigmentation, scars and age spots as this oil helps to fight free radical damage caused by UV rays. I personally love how this oil is readily absorbed by the skin, so it never feels heavy or greasy and it makes a great primer for makeup application.
I often get asked by customers in the store “is there anything that compares to the blue cocoon?” because they want a slightly less expensive balm. My answer is always the same, “sadly, no” because truly nothing compares to this luxurious balm and the price is 100% worth it. I have heard story after story from customers who use this and love it, they rave about how it has transformed their skin and calmed inflammation. The blue tansy which is a star ingredient in this product eases feelings of anxiety (so it is wonderful to use at night) and relieves delicate, inflamed and irritable skin conditions. A little goes a long way with this product, so it really does last quite a while.
Favourite skin care line/my go-to skin care regime:
This elixir has changed the way I look at my beauty routine. First of all, Chase Polan, the founder of KYPRIS is just the most engaging, knowledgeable and sweetest person ever. She takes every aspect of this skin care line to heart and does not believe in the term ‘anti-aging’ as she knows that aging and getting older is a blessing that so many people don’t get to experience. She puts self-care and self-love front and centre and her line of beauty products reflect this sentiment on every level. When I met her, I instantly loved her generosity and warmth and because I had already been using her products, I knew how well they worked. Now, this elixir contains a plethora of botanical extracts and the essential oil of 1,000 (!) organic Bulgarian roses. This is especially designed for those with skin that is challenged by time and unruly hormones or pollution as well as those of us with dry skin. The rose essential oil is known to soften the complexion and helps provide a gorgeous dewy glow. Other ingredients in this all-star product include: Kaneka CoQ10, which is a yeast-derived CoQ10 that has been shown to diminish the appearance of discolouration caused by sun damage. Vitamins A, E and baobab oil help to reinforce the skin’s barrier function by reducing moisture loss and encouraging cellular renewal. Pomegranate seed oil helps to tame inflammation and eliminate signs of overexposure, especially from the sun. This product is designed to be used in conjunction with their serums (either the antioxidant dew, clearing serum or moonlight catalyst-more on these later!). You simply use 2-3 drops (a really tiny amount goes a long way), and press into the skin while offering yourself honest compliments as you anoint your skin. Really that is how it is explained on the bottles instructions, I told you this company is simply amazing.
This is the perfect layering piece with the beauty elixir as it provides the hydration that is necessary for your skin on a deeper level than just the oil can do on its own. This serum contains phospholipid encapsulated antioxidants that target and quench free radicals while the botanicals included calm and soothe the skin, helping with inflammation. This moisturizes the skin and provides long lasting hydration (even in the super cold winter months), while replenishing and reinvigorating the skin and providing that beautiful dewy look. This is free from essential oils so it will work on those with more sensitive skin. To use this product, apply a few drops to a clean face, morning and night (I use this only in the morning) and for the most hydration, use in combination with one of the beauty elixirs.
This serum is described as the herbal alternative to retinoid formulas as it revitalizes the skin all while you catch up on some zzzzz’s. It contains fermented pumpkin enzymes and hydrating botanical extracts that refine and renew your complexion without any irritation or peeling like traditional retinol treatments. I definitely noticed much clearer more refined looking skin after using this product (even after only a few nights), as it helps to keep pores clear and looking very smooth. The sea algae deeply hydrates the skin to replenish its moisture balance without clogging pores. Rosehip seed and sea buckthorn fruit deliver the valuable essential fatty acids and nutrients to help with irritated skin. To use this product, only apply at night to a clean face. You can use one of your beauty elixirs along with it as this provides more hydration and nourishment. In the morning, cleanse your skin to remove the areas you applied this product to.
Favourite face cream:
This cream is again formulated for those with sensitive skin and really works at keeping the skin hydrated throughout the day. It absorbs really well and doesn’t ever feel like it is just sitting on your skin. This helps to ensure your skin looks fresh and soft, which is thanks to the organic avocado and jojoba oils that nourish the skin. If you are looking for a lightweight cream that will last all day and can be mixed with your favourite foundation, then this is a great option.
Favourite Eye Creams:
When it comes to eye creams, I have to be really careful not to use anything too heavy as it causes milia for me, which is always something I am trying to avoid. This eye cream is light, but moisturizing for the delicate eye area, and it helps to brighten and improve the fine lines I am noticing under my eyes (ughhh!). The whole Pai line is designed for those with sensitive skin which is great as well. I have noticed that when using this, my under eye area looks plumper and more hydrated which is something I haven’t been able to say about other ones I have tried.
This is another favourite of mine for under the eye area. I love that this one is oil based and also the roller ball makes application super easy. The herbs in this eye serum work together to transform your skin at a cellular level and leave the area under your eyes looking moisturized and brighter. This also hasn’t caused any more milia which is really important for me, so if you are looking for an eye serum, this one is great.
Oh boy, I have tried my fair share of cleansers over the years! I love this cleanser as it is gentle enough that it doesn’t strip away moisture from my face but it definitely cleans the skin. It is perfect for those with sensitive skin because it is gentle and soothing. This product contains rose geranium essential oils which balance the skin leaving it hydrated and smooth. I really love using this cleanser!
Nothing has come close to this one in terms of performance, ingredients and the ease to which it actually takes off makeup without the need to use coconut oil first! For me, this was a huge plus because sometimes I want to just wash my face in one easy step and this allows me that opportunity. It gets the job done and it does so gently, without leaving my face dry or splotchy afterwards. Your skin will look really luminous and brighter due to the strawberry in it. It has a gentle foam to it which really cleans the skin, but is definitely not harsh, it really is a perfect balance.
I love this line because of the fermentation aspect with the ingredients as this is one of the best ways to get glowing and radiant skin naturally. This particular product is an exfoliater, hydrator and collagen booster all in one. It has helped to even out my skin tone by reversing skin damage caused by UV overexposure and keeps it looking hydrated and fresh. With skin being such a large organ it can use the extra dose of probiotics applied topically in addition to taking probiotic supplements and eating fermented and probiotic rich foods.
Honestly, I didn’t think that I needed a mist in my life, but now I am addicted to this one. This mist is infused with jasmine (obviously), rose oil, ylang-ylang and vanilla essential oil and the scent alone is so utterly divine, you feel as though with every spritz you have been transported somewhere magical. I use it after cleansing my skin and using my serums to lock in that moisture (before bedtime) and then in the morning, after I am finished my makeup application to essentially set my makeup and it provides that perfect dewy glow that I personally love. Warning about this product- it becomes insanely addictive and as May says so herself, don’t stop with just the face, this can be spritzed head to toe, including your hair. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Much like the blue cocoon love, there really is nothing quite like this mask. It is especially beneficial when I am getting the occasional break out or hormonal acne issue and it can be used as a spot treatment if you find the mask a little too much for your skin. I actually love mixing this with my other favourite mask (The Honey Mud) as I find I get the best from both and this way it is not too drying for my skin. Made with raw cacao, charcoal, soil nutrients, salts and warming exotic spices that leave a little tingling sensation on your skin (it goes away, I promise) leaves your skin looking fresh and clean. It fights acne and breakouts and detoxifies the skin thanks to the charcoal. Because it comes loose and transforms with water, it also means that you get the best treatment every time as it is freshly made for you and only becomes potent the moment you make it.
This mask doubles as a beautiful cleanser and is great for those with more dry skin (just like me). Made with raw honey, halloysite clay pure plant oils, this mask treatment is insanely hydrating as well as anti bacterial, anti inflammatory and anti microbial due to the raw honey. The texture is a whole other thing as it feels extraordinary on the skin and becomes addictive due to the way it makes your skin feel and look after a treatment. I like to leave this one for hours at a time, if I have the time and also leaving it on all morning and then washing it off last when I am in the shower. The enzymes in it help to restore hydration to the skin and leave it looking radiant and supple, just the way skin is supposed to look.
I have tried a lot of natural deodorants out there and was having doubts that I could find one that would work for me, until I tried this one! It smells wonderful, but most importantly, it works, which is super important when it comes to deodorant 😉 Many people may not realize that antiperspirants are loaded with potentially nasty and toxic ingredients and when they use products that inhibit the body’s natural process (sweating) they are actually doing a large disservice to their body’s detoxification system. I know that people obviously don’t want to smell and this is why this particular industry does so well, but people should know what ingredients are in their deodorant. With that said, this cream (yes it’s a cream), works very well and has a pleasant smell thanks to the essential oils like bergamot, lime, grapefruit, lemongrass and vanilla in it, which are certified organic! If you have tried a lot of other natural deodorants before and have been unsatisfied, I would urge you to try this one as I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Favourite Hair Products:
Finding the right natural shampoo and conditioner has been another area of frustration, I tried many products that left my hair limp or greasy, both of which are a big no-no. I absolutely love this shampoo especially in the winter when my already dry skin is drier and dandruff is not allowed in my books, enter this savior! This shampoo leaves my hair super shiny and I have received more compliments on my hair since using this than anything else! The ingredients in it are top-notch and I love that this is a local company from Toronto.
Don’t even ask me to try and pronounce this name, I can’t. But, that doesn’t take away from the fact that this conditioner is amazing! This conditioner is a citrus lover’s dream (i.e.-me!) and contains organic lime, lemon, grapefruit and orange oils along with agar seaweed which helps to create the softest hair around. This conditioner provides some serious gloss and volume to lacklustre hair and I love the way these two products (the shampoo and conditioner) work together. The citrus makes for an excellent natural toner, which helps brighten tired looking hair. Your hair will be hydrated and healthy in no time!
Honestly, I was never one for dry shampoos before because all the conventional ones had gross ingredients in them that kept me away. This one though is clean and works wonderfully for when you want to keep your tresses clean in between washes. This is a perfect item to have when travelling; a little goes a long way! Also, the smell is AMAZING.
This mask really does work wonders on my hair which can sometimes look a little dull. It’s also great for those with damaged hair as the oil penetrates into each strand to truly fortify hair with moisture. My hair feels super silky and soft after I use this. I have tried to do a DIY coconut oil mask with my hair, but unfortunately washing it out with natural shampoos and conditioners proved to be quite difficult. This on the other hand does not present that same problem and works wonderfully to restore my hair and keep it looking and feeling extra special.
Now, I don’t personally use this product because I don’t really need it except for keeping the odd fly-away tamed, however, my boyfriend does and that says something! He isn’t really one for natural products, and trust me, I have tried, but he always seems to go back to his conventional ways (bad bf!), but with this one, he has went through two(!) containers of it. He always styles his hair, and needs something that will hold throughout the day and he loves this one. If that is not a ringing endorsement that I don’t know what is!
When I truly want to relax and unwind with a nice bath, these salts are my go-to. Naturally harvested Dead Sea salts are blended with rose geranium and Italian lime essential oil along with organic rose petals to provide that perfect sense of serenity and romance. Dead Sea salt contains magnesium which is an important trace mineral that helps to calm and relax the body and mind, which is so important especially in today’s high stress environment.
Favourite body lotion:
This ultra-hydrating lotion is the best! It glides over skin smoothly and is never greasy or heavy. It is formulated with organic coconut water for its mineral, electrolyte and moisturizing properties and your skin will just eat it up. The toughest part is deciding on which one you like the best because they all smell so ridiculously amazing. Right now, I am partial to the Tahitian vanilla one, but they all smell so amazing and are blended with only the finest therapeutic grade essential oils and herbal extracts so you know they are great for your skin as well.
