I really hope that you enjoyed my previous post all about natural skin care products, because once you get started with the skin it is a great idea to switch out your makeup products as well. Working at The Detox Market has afforded me the opportunity to play around with all sorts of green beauty makeup products and that is a great thing! Growing up, I loved playing with makeup and enjoyed doing makeup for friends and family, but I never paid attention to all the potentially toxic and nasty ingredients that were hidden in my favourite cosmetics. Since making the switch to nothing but green beauty products, I can safely assure you that gone are the days of bland colours or hippie-looking makeup. This is the new era of green beauty makeup products and it looks fabulous!
Before I jump into my fave makeup products, I think it’s important to share that truly glowing, clear skin begins first and foremost with your diet. So, check out my FREE eBook to see which foods I recommend to eat more of and which ones are best to avoid.
This foundation is creamy and very blendable making for a semi-matte, light finish. I am on my second one (the refills btw are genius) and I really like how this one performs. It can be a little tricky when you first begin using it, but I personally find the best application comes from when your skin is truly hydrated and nourished. I like using serums (the squalene oil, from Indie Lee) works great as a primer for this cream foundation to be applied and does make a difference in application. The ingredients include a blend of sweet almond seed oil, coconut oil and jojoba seed oil which are rich in fatty acids that help to promote skin elasticity and reduce the signs of aging. I apply this with their blush brush as this provides for the best looking application.
When I want to be super quick in the morning or evening and want to touch up, or even for a full face of makeup, I turn to this foundation. Convenient because it comes in stick form, but ultra-creamy enough that it melts right into your skin makes this one a big winner in my book. It covers up any redness and balances your skin tone, diminishing imperfections along the way all while providing a nice fresh glow all over. It comes in a range of shades, making it a closer match to your skin tone than a lot of other ones out there, which is something I love.
Highlighters can be a tricky thing to nail down, whether conventional or not. Some can be too sparkly or shimmery which is fine if you are a bit younger, but not so cute when you hit your 30’s (am I right?!). This luminizer is everything!! Seriously, when applied to your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose and above your upper lip and the light hits your face, its absolute perfection. I’ll never forget when I was away on a girls trip and one of my girlfriends said to me, “what do you have on your face?!” I thought, uh-oh… and she said “it looks amazing, what is giving you that glow?” I immediately told her and raved about it and needless to say she purchased one as soon as we were back from our vacation. It’s that good, trust me!
This highlighter is more shimmery than RMS’ but sometimes, that is the effect I am going for after all. The texture is really nice and creamy, and when applied to the skin, it feels super silky and provides a perfect highlight to the cheekbones. The warmness of the colour also makes it great to layer on top of darker eye shadows for a nice iridescent finish. This is one of favourite highlighters for sure!
This cream blush glides on perfectly on the skin and provides a great touch of colour to the cheeks while still allowing for that dewy finish. Made with top notch organic ingredients like castor seed oil, beeswax and jojoba seed oil all nourish and moisturize the skin at the same time. By using a cream blush, it makes it a bit easier to apply and easy to remove if you applied too much. This also lasts all day and doesn’t just fade into the skin, which is a big must when it comes to makeup.
Favourite Brow Enhancer:
Girl… those eyebrows be on fleek after using this product, am I saying that right, or is this totally overused by now?! But seriously, nobody wants bad brows, in fact I know people who state they don’t trust people with bad brows! That may be taking it to the extreme, but in all honesty, brows are super important as they completely shape your face. We can’t all have those Cara Delevingne brows, and we may need a little help, that is where this product comes in. Its lightweight and smudge proof and the waxiness of the product combined with the brush make filling in and defining your brows pretty foolproof. Also, this product seriously lasts forever (it’s a great size and you don’t need too much).
I love a good winged liner every now and then or even just a simple liquid lined eye. It looks dramatic and clean all at the same time and has always been my preferred way to line my eyes over a traditional pencil. This liner goes on smooth and does not smudge and lasts all day! There are also no preservatives or fragrance added so it is perfect for those with sensitive eyes. It is water resistant, but comes off easily when I wash my face with cleanser or remove it with coconut oil beforehand. This is the best natural liquid liner out there, hands down!
This was one of the last natural beauty products I purchased when deciding to make the switch from conventional because lashes are my thing. I was worried that nothing could compare to my mascara addiction and love of big lashes. I remember the first time I tried this product and thought to myself, “no way is this actually happening right now?!” but safe to say I wasn’t dreaming and the results were in fact real. I will admit I get stuck in my ways, so much so, that I just can’t get myself to try any other natural mascara because I am so happy with this one. I recently tried the gluten-free version of this and it works just as wonderfully, and has a bigger brush (if that’s more your thing).
As I must confess, I am naturally pretty pale, but I love a good sun-kissed glow and this product delivers that without being orange-y or sparkly. That is super important to me as I hate looking like I have bronzer on, I just want to look like I got back from vacation (all the time) and this allows me to do that. It is creamy instead of powder which actually makes application a breeze. It also contains wild crafted Buriti oil, which is the highest oil in Vitamin A, which is great for the skin, so you’re actually applying something nourishing for your skin at the same time.
Favourite Eye shadow:
These eye shadows are not only beautiful in colour but the packaging combined with the lasting power (and no creases!) make it a must have. You can also just purchase the refills and keep them in your own palette as well, that is what I do. These eye shadows contain organic ingredients like bamboo, honeysuckle as well as gardenia Florida fruit extract which is a powerful antioxidant that works as a natural preservative. These can be used as eyeliners of course, which is great if you want a softer look than that of a liquid liner, just dampen your liner brush with a little water.
Sometimes, you need a little extra concealer in addition to just foundation, and this concealer is great for that. It blends really well and goes on super smooth and is not dry at all, which is important for that sensitive area under the eyes. It can cover dark circles and blemishes quite effortlessly and works well with any foundation on top. I have always had dark circles (my whole life) and that pretty much always makes me look tired even when I am not, but this concealer helps to cover that quite a bit. Bonus: It de-puffs and brightens up the under eye area amazingly well, thanks to the coffee, algae and pomegranate.
Favourite lip balm:
Anyone that has studied Ayurveda will know that this traditional medicine of India maintains that there are three doshas (or body types): Vata, Pitta and Kapha. I happen to be primarily pitta and that can mean I often need things that will cool me down because I am always hot, you see 😉 and this lip balm helps with that. It contains coconut oil, lemongrass and peppermint to help balance out my dosha and keep my lips conditioned and soft. The ingredients in all of their lip balms are organic and cold-pressed in addition to being raw, vegan and gluten free. These are the best lip balms out there, I seriously never leave home without one!
Ilia makes the best lipsticks in my opinion, they are long-lasting, moisturizing and contain 85% certified organic, bio-active botanicals in each product. I have never been one for lipsticks, I am much more of a lip balm only kind of girl, but for those times I want to wear a lipstick, I turn to this one in particular. It is a nice neutral colour that looks good on everyone and is light enough for everyday use which is why I personally love it. It never feels like it is drying out my lips either which is important for someone as obsessed with applying lip balm as I am.
Being the mainly non-lipstick wearer that I am, I love a good lip shine and the ones from RMS are great. They aren’t sticky at all and are actually nourishing for the lips thanks to the naturally fatty acids and vitamin A and C also provide antioxidant protection as well. The organic oils and pure mineral pigments make this lip shine quite hydrating and I can’t stop applying the lip shade honest on my lips throughout the day. They last quite a while and just look completely natural which is something I love during the day.
