Today’s post on Nutritionist Eats is a good indication that listening to your body and giving it what it needs is so important.
I woke up and had a mug of bone broth made in my slow cooker the day before, it was warming and felt exactly like what I wanted. After finishing that, I checked some emails and then started to get ready for another round of my HIIT session. I got through most of it and then had to stop, I felt like I was going to throw up and my stomach was in knots. I think what happened was that I drank too much water (liquids) prior to working out and unfortunately this digestive trouble lasted me all day!
I felt like I had to eat something for breakfast and recharge my body, so I decided to make eggs in avocado, which is pretty much the combination of my two favourite things. That took like 20 minutes to cook, so when it was done, I was pretty hungry. I slightly overcooked the eggs, but ate them anyways and then after felt way worse. This was a good reminder to take it easy and not try and follow rules about food and what I “should be” eating and when. I didn’t listen to my body and it wasn’t pretty…
Afternoon rolled around and my appetite did not return, which is strange for me, because I am one of those people that is always hungry. I listened to my hunger cues and didn’t eat again until about 2:45-3:00. I made myself the last of my coconut yogurt and used some frozen berries, giving them about 10-15 minutes to defrost and added some cacao nibs.
After I ate that, I was still a little hungry and was craving a piece of chocolate (because PMS), so I had a row of dark chocolate from zazubean, this was the sea salt and almond, so good!
PMS cravings continued and in the early evening I made some grain free brownies because I had some fresh almond flour that I just made from making my almond milk. I used the recipe from The Detoxinista and subbed the apple sauce for almond butter because I didn’t have applesauce and cut the sugar to 3/4 cup. These were pretty good considering I don’t always like grain free desserts, #sorrynotsorry #givemethegluten
I decided to act like a responsible adult and make dinner and my appetite had returned by this point. I had a lot of mushrooms to use up, so I decided to make a rice bowl with brussels sprouts and those mushrooms. No bowl is complete without some sort of sauce in my opinion so I whipped up a quick batch of miso gravy (the recipe for this is from Refresh cookbook from Fresh restaurant in Toronto) and drizzled that all over. I didn’t add any extra protein because surprisingly mushrooms contain a decent amount of protein, but if you wanted to, you could add some cubed tofu or chicken breast with this and it would be great. Just look at those cinnamon cap mushrooms- my favourite!
That wraps up another edition of What I Ate Monday, hopefully you are getting a sense of what I eat and this is showing you how I put together meals. Sometimes they are a bit more well rounded than others, but I really do try and give my body what it needs and nourish it with whole foods as much as possible. I also get cravings and sometimes I am not the best at listening to how I feel, but life is all about learning what works and doesn’t work for you.
Until next time…I’ll be eating all the brownies 😉
