Crispy Honey Garlic Chicken Wings (Made Healthy)

honey garlic chicken wings

I must confess, I have a thing for chicken wings. Especially these crispy honey garlic chicken wings. The part I love the most is that they are baked and they only take about 40 minutes to cook. The honey garlic sauce is also so delicious and if you are like me and like a bit of heat, don't skip the chili flakes. Overall, these chicken wings can be served up for any occasion and not just your typical foodie situations, like football. Because I don't watch nor understand anything about football, but I do know food and these are damn good.

Are Chicken Wings Actually Healthy?

Whenever you think about chicken wings, you may think they are unhealthy. After all, how can something that tastes so good, not be bad for us. Now, I am not saying to eat these everyday of the year (and really, would you truly want that?) but every now and then, get your chicken wing on.

After I made these the first time, I kept saying...

"How are these so good?"

And...

"Why do people bread them and/or deep fry them? They taste just as good baked."

I really meant that last one too. Call me crazy, but there is just no need.

My Personal Food Philosophy:

I love using whole food and high quality ingredients no matter what. And that isn't because I feel the need to do it for any external reason. I simply enjoy both supporting those that created the food and supporting my own health. It's something that has been very important to me. And I simply love showing others that they can still enjoy all their favourite foods by simply changing the ingredients. Use better quality ingredients and be surprised at how good the food tastes without changing the recipe.

When You've Tried Every Diet...

These crispy honey garlic chicken wings prove that 100 times over. My approach to food is always that you need to honour your body and its wishes. I went far too long, trying to do what everyone else was doing and felt confused and embarrassed when things didn't turn out the same. I was vegan and vegetarian prior to that for a long time, then I tried other diets like paleo, gluten free, grain free, dairy free, keto (for like 2 days) and nothing worked. The reason wasn't that there was something wrong with the approach itself. The reason was because I was doing it for the wrong reasons. My reason for doing it was solely based on my appearance and so I would always try to go harder and take it further. Restrict more and more and then... binge. There is only so much you can restrict before it kind of falls apart.

No More Food Fear:

So my approach now, is to listen to my body. It's taken a long time to get here, but I did it. Sometimes, my body wants lots of smoothies, salads, fats, or pasta and in this case crispy honey garlic chicken wings. There isn't any judgement, second guessing or trying to health-ify everything. Sometimes, your girl just wants pizza and not the gluten/grain free/dairy free kind either. But I don't overdo it anymore either. Why? Because I know that the food is going to be there no matter what. There is no more restriction, so I don't do that whole "last supper" thing anymore. It isn't going to be taken away because I am jumping on a new diet or trendy plan. So I can eat it all (if I truly want it) or eat a little bit. Food doesn't control me anymore. Also, eating too much usually doesn't make me feel so good, so I try to eat mindfully and remember that so I don't binge

Ingredients

For the sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Place the chicken wings in a large bowl (or use a ziploc bag) and toss with baking powder, sea salt and 1 1/2 tsp avocado oil.
  3. Place them on the baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes.
  4. Make the sauce by heating up the 1/2 tsp avocado oil and adding the minced garlic, sauté over medium-low for about 30 seconds. Then add tamari, rice vinegar, ground ginger and chili flakes. Let that simmer for a few minutes.
  5. In the last 30 seconds or so, add the raw honey and stir to combine, if using raw honey make sure the heat is very low. It should be fairly thick now.
  6. Remove the sauce from heat and add 1/2 tsp toasted sesame oil to finish.
  7. Once the chicken wings are crispy remove them from the oven and toss them with the sauce. Sprinkle some sesame seeds over top and serve immediately.

Notes

Paleo: use coconut aminos instead of tamari, and use apple cider vinegar instead of rice vinegar.
