Best Non Toxic Foundation: My Full Review

Foundation is a tricky makeup product and when you're trying to find the best non toxic foundation, it can feel nearly impossible. Some are too light and don't offer enough coverage, others are too heavy. Over the past few years, I've tried a lot of different ones, and I wanted to share my full review with you. I'm reviewing every single foundation and concealer that I've personally purchased.

foundation bottles laid out on pink table.

The Best Non Toxic Foundation: Criteria for My Review

For each non toxic foundation, I wanted to give an overall rating and describe how each one works. Plus I offer tips to using the product and whether or not I'd repurchase it.

The Best Non Toxic Foundation:

Vapour, Soft Focus Foundation:

This is my current favourite foundation and I'm on my second bottle of it.

Reasons I love it:

  • Great for dry skin (which I have).
  • Provides a nice, dewy finish rather than too matte, which I also appreciate. If needed, you can use some translucent powder in the t-zone.
  • Leaves your skin glowing.
  • Fair amount of coverage, which can be built up if you also use a concealer, or use more product.
  • It lasts throughout the day, without any creasing.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • Can leave your skin feeling a little greasy, especially if your skin is more on the oily side.
  • Isn't heavy on coverage, so if you're looking for more coverage, you may need to use more or try another product.
  • Price Point: fairly expensive, although it does last quite a long time for me, usually about 5 to 6 months. I wear makeup nearly everyday.

My rating is 9/10 and I'd definitely repurchase, I already have (three times!)

Unfortunately, Vapour Beauty went out of business and these products are no longer available. Ugh!

Sappho New Paradigm, Essential Foundation:

I've used this in the past and I think it's a good foundation option, although for dry skin it hasn't worked quite as well.

Reasons I love it:

  • Works great for those that have more oily or combination skin.
  • Offers a fair amount of coverage.
  • It feels great on the skin and is very breathable.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • If you have dry skin, or dry patches, this will emphasize it.
  • The new formulation doesn't wear as nice as the previous version, in my opinion.

My rating is a 7/10 because it doesn't work on my skin type and I don't love the new formulation as much as the older one.

Kjaer Weis, Cream Foundation:

I've used this a lot in the past and it offers a lot of benefits, however the price is quite steep.

Reasons I love it:

  • I love the packaging, as the foundation is easily replaced once you buy the compact, making it very eco friendly.
  • Offers a lot more coverage than others, without feeling too heavy.
  • Very creamy, making it feel rich and smooth on the skin, without feeling too heavy.
  • Semi-matte finish.
  • Made with high quality ingredients that nourish your skin and help with elasticity and aging.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • The price point is quite steep, although the refills are cheaper and on par with other non toxic foundations.
  • If used incorrectly, it can be hard to apply and get it the way you want it to look. It takes some time, practice and patience.
  • Your skin needs to be very hydrated to get this looking the best. I personally like adding an extra drop of oil on my skin and then applying the cream foundation.

My rating is a 9/10 because I really do love the consistency of the product and also the packaging. It's totally buildable as well, so don't be intimidated by the creaminess. You can control how heavy or light you want your coverage to be.  I've repurchased this one several times as well.

Fitglow Beauty, Vita-Active Foundation:

I've written about many Fitglow products over here, so check that out. Overall, I do like this foundation, however it is quite light in terms of coverage.

Reasons I love it:

  • Made with AMAZING, skin-loving ingredients that are nourishing to your skin. This is truly one of the cleanest foundations on the market in my opinion.
  • Great if you like a light coverage that feels light on the skin.
  • It really makes your skin look amazing and glow-y.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • It can cling to any dry patches you have on your skin, so make sure you exfoliate well and also keep your skin hydrated.
  • Fairly light in terms of coverage, so you may need to use more product to build it up or use a concealer in addition to this one.
  • The colours I find can be a bit hard to match to your skin tone, so it can be a little more difficult to find the right shade.

My rating is an 8/10 as I find it is a little light in coverage compared to others, however, I do love the ingredients in it. I don't think I'd repurchase right now as I have found other products I like better.

The Best Non Toxic Concealer:

RMS Beauty, "Un" Cover Up:

This is a cult classic for a reason. It works really well for a lot of different skin types and feels great on the skin.

Reasons I love it:

  • It sits on the skin very well and is really moisturizing.
  • The creamy formulation is great for dry skin but it also works on other skin types as well.
  • It blends very well, so there are no creases.
  • Leaves your skin dewy looking and hydrated, without looking heavy or that you have a lot of makeup on.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • It doesn't have the most coverage of all, so if you're looking for heavier coverage, this may not be it.
  • Doesn't last all day, although it may be better with a finishing powder on top.

My rating is an 8.5/10 as I find the coverage isn't as much as I'd like. Although, the formula itself is great, and I've repurchased it in the past and likely will again.

RMS un cover up

Hynt Beauty, Duet Perfecting Concealer:

This super concentrated concealer offers incredible coverage and is still fairly creamy and feels great on the skin.

Reasons I love it:

  • It works great at concealing dark under eye circles (which is something I always have) and blemishes.
  • Very hydrating and feels great on the skin.
  • Doesn't settle into any lines under the eyes.
  • It lasts a long time, as you only need a small amount.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • It can take a while to get the coverage just right, as it can be quite heavy. A little really goes a long way with this one.
  • You need to make sure your skin is very hydrated.

My rating is a 9/10 as I really do love the way this covers and stay on the skin. I am almost out (see the photo below!), and I will repurchase.

W3LL People, Bio Correct Multi-Action Concealer:

I like this concealer a lot for how well it blends and especially for how well it covers and brightens under the eyes.

Reasons I love it:

  • Depuffs and brightens the under eye area.
  • It offers fairly decent coverage for under eye circles.
  • A little goes a long way.
  • The price point is great for the product.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • It can cling to some dry spots on your skin, but under the eyes it works great.
  • The size is tiny, however, you don't need a lot so it still lasts a long time.

My rating is a 9/10 as I do really like the coverage it provides and the consistency of it. It's also very easy to apply! I have repurchased it in the past, and will again.

Best Non Toxic Foundation: Overall Winners

The best non toxic foundation for me is a tie between Vapour (liquid) and Kjaer Weis (cream).

As for the best non toxic concealers, I love all of them and would recommend them based on what you're needs are. If you need lighter, creamier coverage, go with RMS.

If you want more coverage, go with Hynt.

And W3LL People is great for under the eyes as well and has an excellent price point.

How To Prep Your Skin for Non Toxic Foundation

I'm sure you've noticed how important it is to ensure your skin is well hydrated.

Beyond this, it's SO important to make sure you're exfoliating regularly as well. You can read more about exfoliating and which products I recommend over here!

And last, prepping your skin with a primer is also a great option. I love this one from Hynt Beauty, Skin Prep Serum. It goes on really well, and it smoothes your skin so that it looks even better when you apply your favourite non toxic foundation.

Thank you for this post, dear. It's good to know which eyeliners are the least toxic (and best-performing). I used traditional toxic ones for years and do believe it had a lasting adverse impact on my eyesight. So this info is very important! Titanium dioxide contains nanoparticles that penetrate human tissues.

Loved the salmon and the mayo, but I didn’t feel the coconut rice really added anything and my kids did not enjoy it, so next time I will make it with either plain rice or sushi rice, but it has definitely made it into the rotation of favorites. Thanks!

I've prepared this tart several times and found that reducing the fat for caramelizing the onions works wonders. Initially, I stuck to the recipe, but later, I decided to use just butter and skip the oil, resulting in a less greasy pastry. Additionally, turning the garlic into a paste and spreading it on the pastry base seemed to even out the flavor beautifully. This tart reminds me of French onion soup....wonderful!

After I tasted them I thought, they'll never last long enough to put them in the fridge. I can't put into words how good these are. I try a lot of recipes, this is my all time favorite. Thank you

Hey! I made some slight modifications to the original recipe, but it came out ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. I cubed up the squash, tossed it in olive oil with some seasonings, and took whole garlic cloves and made confit while the squash was roasting together in the oven. I took onion and caramelized it, and boiled the cashews with seasoning and a ton of salt while everything else was doing its thing. The salty cashew water was the water I used to blend up my sauce. I took some bone in skin on chicken thighs, seared the skin crispy in a ripping hot pan, flipped it and turned the heat down, melted butter and put the squash sauce in the pan for it all to cook together. Since I used cast iron, I put it in the oven on convection til the chicken was cooked and served it over pasta. I knew I'd love this but my husband was a huge fan too. We didn't use pumpkin seeds but I did put spinach in the sauce with the pan to cook in the oven with the chicken. 11/10

Hi Stephanie, You can use a stove top method for cooking the rice, I indicated where to find this in the tips section (the link for that recipe is here: https://www.holisticfoodie.com/recipes/cilantro-lime-chicken-and-rice-bowls). Enjoy!

WOW!!! I have made this recipe about 4 times in the last month! She is so good at combining flavors! The sweet in the rice and salmon, the sour with the pickled cucumbers, and the umami of the Sriracha mayo is fantastic! I also have never been able to cook salmon well (it's always soggy or overcooked). Broiling it with the yummy marinade gives it the perfect texture while keeping the salmon medium rare inside. I really recommend trying this recipe!

This recipe is SOOOOOOO GOOD!! The sauce is amazing, the right amount t of heat with the peppers, and the meat marinade is delicious!! I even took the leftovers and added it to a spinach and arugula salad, made the sauce again to put on top and it was great! This will be a weekly staple for my family!

Hi Chelsea, Step two clearly states when to add the milk. I also discussed in the tips section about when to use milk and when not to, depending on the type of yogurt you're using. Were you using a non fat yogurt or a full fat yogurt?

Hi Angela! I'm so glad you enjoy the recipe and have found ways to make them your own. The maple sugar sounds like a great substitute. These cookies are definitely on the thinner side, but delicious nonetheless. Thanks for sharing your feedback and I'm so happy you'll be making these lots :)

This cookie recipe is absolutely one of the best paleo/gluten free cookies I've ever made. The browned butter makes the recipe, that is such a genius touch!!! The only change I made to make it almost fully paleo was I subbed maple sugar for the white sugar. It gave it more of a maple flavor (naturally) but I thought it was still really good. Just a note from my experience: even though I chilled the dough for an hour and I used 2 tbsp per cookie like the recipe called for, the cookies spread out very flat when I baked them. I also had to bake them twice as long, about 16 minutes. They tasted great but they were very fragile and fell apart quite easily because they were so thin. So I tried doing some with just 1 tbsp of dough per cookie and those turned out way better! They baked properly in about 10 minutes and they held their shape really well. So going forward I will always make smaller cookies because this recipe is a winner and I will be making these a lot!

You have got it exactly right, wow well done. I used 2tsp Manuka honey to sweeten the onion mixture at 20 mins in. Your pics are excellent, NOT overcooked. Ext virg olive oil is my everyday 'do-all'. Only point beginners must attend to is add the Gruyere as late as possible and plenty of it! Sublime, sexy, wonderful!

Hi Jen! For this, I serve with crackers and veggies such as carrots, radish and cucumber. I also included figs in the photo, but I'd stick to veggies and crackers for this. It can be made in advance and kept in the fridge, I'd recommend storing it separately from the dukkah topping. It tastes best at room temperature so leave it out for 20 minutes or so prior to serving and drizzle with the olive oil and top with dukkah then. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Hi Sue! Thanks for the review. There is quite a bit of butter from puff pastry, plus melted cheese so it can be a bit heavy. Sometimes, I'll blot the top of it with paper towel to remove any excess oil. If you make it again, I hope you enjoy it better the second time :)

Hello Jaclyn, Your slow-roasted salmon with citrus and fennel recipe is a culinary revelation! The method of slow roasting to achieve that perfectly juicy salmon, combined with the bright, bold flavors of the marinade, is a testament to your skill and creativity in the kitchen. I particularly appreciate the focus on simplicity and the infusion of fresh, vibrant ingredients which elevate the dish to a new level of deliciousness. Thank you for sharing this, and keep those flavors coming!

Hello Jaclyn, I understand it when you say, "...I know how hard it is (for women especially) to look in the mirror and hate what they see". I also understand the historical targeting of women's bodies to be thin from the promotion of whale bone corsets to Spanx "shapewear". But, as a man currently using incognito mode to Google the phrase "how to love yourself when you hate your weight" (because I'm too self-conscious and embarrassed to have it in my search history) let me just say a lot of us men had parents and other toxic influences that passed along the same warped motto, "look good = feel good". I'm just beginning my journey to self love. I have no doubt it will be HARD AF, but so is looking in the mirror everyday and hating what you see. Thanks for the article - lots of takeaways to start on!

Hi Kimberly, I'm not sure what you mean by the taste is off as I'm not there to try it myself. You can always try adding more salt, lemon juice or nutritional yeast to taste. If it needs to be creamier, you can try adding a splash of milk (oat, soy or regular) as well. I hope that helps :)

Thank you so much for this article. I love tofu but I’m still trying to learn how to use it. I tried the air fryer method but it came out very dry and rubbery. Made this recipe for my boyfriend and I on Halloween! It is the perfect fall dish. It is easy to make vegan, nut & gluten free if you use gluten free pasta and do the sunflower seed substitute. My non-vegan boyfriend loved it so much they have asked me to make it again! It is so creamy & has the perfect crunch with the sage and pumpkin seeds.

Hi Henrik! Thanks for letting me know you made them. Depending on the size of your food processor, it can be a lot to pulse all at once, so maybe working in batches is better. I'm glad you liked them and they firmed up for you :) Enjoy the rest!

Yep, they firmed up nicely. I'm freezing four, and looking forward to having the other four, dressed with sauerkraut, pickles, mustard, vegan mayo, onions, banana chiles, and maybe even ketchup. Yum!

Well I ended up baking them for 23 minutes (@400F). They're delicious! A bit soft, but I'm hoping they'll firm up when they cool. Texture is good too. Thanks for this!
