The Best Natural Dry Shampoo & How to Stretch Your Hair Washing Days
For as long as I can remember, I've had "interesting hair." When I was younger, I had this wavy, thickkkk, uncontrollable hair. And in elementary school I would always wear my hair up in a bun because I didn't know how to style it and neither did my mom. She had no idea how to control it. Then one day, a kid asked me why I always wore it in a bun. I didn't have an answer, I was incredibly shy and didn't want any attention on me. So I decided the next day that I would wear my hair down. My mom asked me, "are you sure?" and I said yes. That was the last time I wore it down for a while haha. I've since learned how to manage my hair and because I have so much of it, I like to stretch my hair washing days as much as possible. So I rely on dry shampoo A LOT. I wanted to share the best natural dry shampoo and products with you, so here we go.

Why Dry Shampoo:
Dry shampoo is one of my go-to products because I really only like washing my hair one to two times a week. And by using dry shampoo, I am able to stretch those hair washing days more. Plus it helps keep my hair looking clean and fresh and styled. It is one of the only hair care products that I cannot live without.
How I use Dry Shampoo:
The way that I like to use dry shampoo is as needed. Usually, on day 3 or 4, I find that I need to use a little. Because I do work out most days and get sweaty, I rely on it even more.
In regards to working out, this is what I like to do:
- Use a little dry shampoo in my hair before I work out. This helps to keep it a little extra dry I find.
- After working out, I simply blow dry the roots with a brush. It sounds gross to do this, but it works. Basically, you just want to blow dry the roots as that is usually the part that is the most sweaty.
- After blow drying the roots, I apply my dry shampoo and work it into my hair with my fingers.
That's it! I find doing these three things the most important in keeping my hair looking and feeling fresh longer.
The Problem with Many Conventional Dry Shampoos:
Like many conventional beauty products, they are often made with synthetic and potentially toxic ingredients. In many dry shampoo products, you have ingredients such as fragrance, talc, dyes, parabens and phthalates. All of which can disrupt your hormones and cause other health issues. Specifically with dry shampoo, many times, the aerosol component causes issues not only for our health, but also the environment as well, as it is harmful to the ozone layer.
Another ingredient in conventional dry shampoo is cetrimonium chloride which is used to help banish hair static.
"This ingredient has been classified by the AFH Library as toxic, irritating and allergenic, not to mention lethal if orally ingested. The EU Cosmetics Directive only allows a maximum concentration of .1% to be used."

However, these regulations are not the same in the West.
Another ingredient to watch for is alcohol, which is used to help draw moisture from the scalp. However, this can lead to long term hair and scalp damage. As with other conventional beauty products, other ingredients such as silicones and siloxanes should also be avoided.
The Best Natural Dry Shampoo I Recommend:
When it comes to using natural dry shampoo, I have tried a few over the years. These are the ones that I personally use and recommend.
Kaia Naturals, Overnight Dry Shampoo:
I've been using this spray version for a while and I love how easy it is to apply. If you give it a shake, quite a bit can come out at once, so go light on the spray. This stuff works best when you leave it on overnight. Although, I have used it before a workout and then again a little after I blow dry it again and it works that way as well. As with any dry shampoo, you only need to apply it to the roots and then blend with your fingers and a a brush. I love that it comes in both blonde and brunette. Overall, I really like this product and I would re-purchase.

Joyous Health, Dry Shampoo:
I have also been trying this dry shampoo out for a few weeks now and I LOVE it! When it comes to hair, Joy has some of the best, so I knew I could trust this formula. It works really well to absorb any oil and again comes in two shades for those with light and dark hair. And it also blends in really well, so you won't have any white roots! Plus, it also has such an amazing (and natural) scent to it. This one has a little sifter cap on it so you can just sprinkle as much as you need and go. I just lightly shake it on my roots, blend it with my fingertips and then brush it in. Overall, I liked this product and recommend it as well.
Innersense, Refresh Dry Shampoo:
This dry shampoo is actually a foam instead of a powder. I was excited to try this one as I LOVEEE all Innersense products, you can read my review of the line here. Unfortunately, it didn't really work for my hair. It gave me some great volume but it didn't work to absorb the oil like I wanted it to. For that reason, I wouldn't repurchase it.
My Go-To Hair Products:
When it comes to styling my hair, I am usually a less-is-more kind of girl. It is more so because I am not great at styling my hair, I tend to just blow dry it straight. But, there are a few products other than the dry shampoos listed above that I really do love and recommend.
Innersense, I Create Waves:
I used this product a lot during the summer as my hair gets a little wavy, unruly and frizzy. So I sprayed some of this in my hair to create waves that were a lot more tame and manageable. I would just spray it on dry hair that was a couple days post-wash to revitalize it and give it some nice texture. And I also spray this on my roots right after washing it as well, which helps create some lift and volume.
Serum Spray, Josh Rosebrook:
This is my go-to spray after washing my hair to help reduce frizz and make my hair so much softer. Plus it also helps protect my hair against the heat from my hair dryer. The smell of this product is amazing!! I wish I could bottle it and wear it. I use it mainly for the heat protection but it also does a good job at making my hair a lot softer and smoother.
For my everyday shampoo and conditioner, I am still using and loving Innersense. You can read my full review of the line, over here.
